#ThrowbackThursday #Coffmans70th
We are rolling into the 2000s for the next chapter of our 70th Anniversary #TBT series! The turn of the millennium was a golden era of national recognition, exclusive partnerships, and major milestones for Coffman’s Men’s Wear in Greenville, NC.
Here is how we made history:
• The Coffman`s Magazine (2003): We took our commitment to style to the next level by publishing our very first custom lifestyle and fashion magazine for our clients!
• Award-Winning Service: Excellence is in our DNA. During this decade, Coffman’s was honored with the prestigious First Citizens Bank Amazing Customer Service Award—a testament to the community`s trust in us.
• Exclusive Luxury Shop-in-Shops (2005 & 2008): We completely remodeled the store to bring world-class luxury environments to Pitt County. In 2005, we added a dedicated Robert Talbott shop (one of only seven in the entire United States at the time). Then, in 2008, we partnered with Peter Millar to introduce the very first Peter Millar shop-in-shop in the world!
• 2005 Franco Sicilia, our tailor, joins the Coffman’s staff.
• The Big 50th Anniversary (2006): In 2006, we proudly celebrated a half-century of being your hometown menswear destination.
• MR Magazine Uptown/Downtown Award (2008): The national fashion industry took notice! Coffman’s was selected as one of only 20 North American retailers to receive this coveted honor, celebrating our retail savvy and innovation.
The 2000s Trendsetters & The ECU Connection: The fashion landscape was shifting toward casual luxury, and two iconic brands defined the era at Coffman`s:
• Peter Millar: Founded in 2001 by East Carolina University (ECU) alumnus Chris Knott, the brand started with a single, top-tier cashmere sweater in an array of vibrant colors. Coffman`s was at the table when it was first presented, immediately recognizing that old-world craftsmanship.
From putting Greenville on the global retail map to celebrating 50 years of family business, the 2000s was a decade of pure momentum.

#ThrowbackThursday #coffmans70th
We are fast-forwarding into the 1990s for the next chapter of our 70th Anniversary #TBT series! This was a defining decade of consolidation, massive milestones, and iconic, bold fashion choices for Coffman’s Men’s Wear in Greenville, NC.
Here is how we shaped the nineties:
• The Move to Lynndale Shoppes (1990): We realized our better menswear experience was best suited for an upscale, free-standing neighborhood shopping area and we opened a store in Lynndale Shoppes.
The Brothers Unite (1990): The family legacy grew even stronger when George’s oldest son, John Coffman, officially joined the business in 1990, teaming up with his brother Bill to carry the torch forward.
• Consolidating into Red Banks (1992): To give our clients the absolute best selection under one roof, we made the strategic choice in 1992 to close our downtown Evans Street location and combine both stores into our expanded, modern Red Banks Road destination.
• 40 Years of Excellence (1996): In 1996, Coffman’s proudly celebrated its 40th Anniversary of outfitting the sharpest gentlemen across Pitt County and Eastern North Carolina.
• Todd Howell joined the Coffman Staff in 1996 and becomes an instrumental part of the Coffman’s Staff.
• While the classic preppy trends of the `80s stood strong, the `90s saw the explosive rise of high-quality, luxury knitwear like Coogi Sweaters and Bobby Jones double-mercerized Egyptian and Pima cotton knits.
From consolidating our roots on Red Banks Road to keeping Eastern NC ahead of the decade`s biggest style waves, the `90s laid the groundwork for the Coffman`s you know and love today!
💬 Who remembers when we officially moved all operations to Red Banks Road? Did you ever wear a legendary Coogi sweater or Bobby Jones knit back in the day?

We are stepping into the ultra-preppy 1980s for the next chapter of our 70th Anniversary #TBT series! This was a monumental decade for Coffman’s Men’s Wear, marked by major expansions, milestone anniversaries, and a true family legacy taking root in Greenville, NC.
Here is what it looked like in the 1980s:
• The Carolina East Mall Era (1979): Right at the tail end of `79, Coffman’s jumped into the golden age of suburban retail expansion by opening a second location inside the brand-new Carolina East Mall!
• 30 Years of Style (1986): In 1986, we proudly celebrated our 30th anniversary of outfitting the sharpest gentlemen in Pitt County. Three decades of premium service and counting!
• A True Family Legacy (1988): The Coffman’s story became a multi-generational tradition in 1988 when George’s youngest son, Bill Coffman, officially joined the business!
• The Ultimate `80s Preppy Trends: Fashion in the 1980s was all about that classic, upscale collegiate look. Polo by Ralph Lauren burst onto the scene and quickly became the hottest premium sportswear line at Coffman’s. From crisp polo shirts to timeless tailoring, the Ivy League and country club aesthetics were in full swing.
From the bustling corridors of the Carolina East Mall to the arrival of the next generation of the Coffman family, the 1980s set the stage for the modern era of our business.

An English Taxi, Flares, & The Evans Street Mall: Coffman’s in the `70s!
#ThrowbackThursday #Coffmans70th
We are turning back the clock to the 1970s for part four of our 70th Anniversary #TBT series! This was a decade of massive transformation, unique style shifts, and some unforgettable local history in Downtown Greenville, NC.
If you were around in the mid-70s, you remember when the face of downtown shopping changed forever:
• The Evans Street Mall (December 1975): To revitalize the downtown business district and compete with the new suburban shopping malls, Greenville launched a bold project. A two-block stretch of Evans Street (from Five Points to Third Street) was closed to all vehicular traffic, transforming into an open-air, pedestrian-only walkway!
• A Major Expansion: Right in step with downtown`s new look, Coffman’s underwent a massive remodel in 1975 at 315 Evans Street. We expanded across the entire first floor, creating a premier, dedicated destination for high-quality men`s suits and sport coats.
• The Iconic English Taxi: Getting inventory to the store in style! Deliveries during this era were made using an authentic 1960s English taxi that George Coffman personally purchased in London and shipped back to Greenville. It was a true downtown staple!
• The `70s Style Trends: Fashion was evolving! The era of the structured look made room for premium denim with different leg interpretations (hello, flares!), textured corduroy, classic flannel, and the ultimate statement piece: waist-length and hip-length leather jackets.
Whether you walked the open-air Evans Street Mall or remember seeing the English taxi, the 1970s was an incredible chapter in our 70-year history.
💬 Who remembers the pedestrian mall on Evans Street? Did you ever spot the Coffman`s English delivery taxi around town? Share your memories with us below! 👇

Coffman’s in the Swinging ‘60s!
#ThrowbackThursday #Coffmans70th
As we continue our 70th Anniversary #TBT series, we’re stepping into the 1960s—a decade of massive growth, and iconic style trends,
In the ‘60s, Coffman’s Men`s Wear became the premier destination for East Carolina University (ECU) students.
Some of the major highlights from the 60’s were:
• We pulled out all the stops for our in-store events. For one unforgettable celebration, we even had Miss North Carolina, Betty Lane Evans, modeling sweaters and greeting customers and students!
• The Big Move (1967): To keep up with demand, Coffman’s underwent a major expansion. In 1967, we officially moved into the historic old J.C. Penney building at 315 Evans Street, expanding our footprint in the heart of Greenville.
• What was the ultimate campus uniform back then? The 1960s was all about the classic Ivy League look. Students and locals flocked to Coffman`s for natural shoulder suits, sharp sport coats, crisp Gant button-down shirts, and, of course, the legendary Bass Weejuns loafers.
• Doug Williams starts as a part time employee while attending ECU
From dressing ECU Pirates for job interviews to outfitting Greenville`s sharpest gentlemen, the 1960s solidified our passion for classic style and community connection.
Calling all ECU Alumni! Did you shop at the Evans Street location back in the day? What was your go-to style? Let us know in the comments! 👇

From Batchelor Bros. to Coffman’s: Where 70 Years of Style Began!
#ThrowbackThursday #Coffmans70th
Did you know that the story of better menswear in Greenville, NC took a historic turn exactly 70 years ago? Today, we are kicking off a special #TBT series celebrating seven decades of Coffman’s Men’s Wear, and we’re taking it all the way back to day one: 1956.
Swipe through to see a piece of Downtown Greenville history! 📸👇
• The original Batchelor Bros. Men’s Store storefront and the heartfelt letter sent by Ed Batchelor to his loyal friends and customers in Pitt County, announcing his retirement after 40 incredible years.
• The historic passing of the torch! Ed Batchelor hands over the keys—and a 40-year tradition of excellence—to a sharp young man with a vision, George S. Coffman.
• A proud George S. Coffman inside the shop, and the very first Coffman’s Men’s Wear storefront window display featuring the iconic script logo we still love today.
When George took charge in 1956, he promised to continue a legacy of EXCELLENT service and premium quality for Eastern Carolina. Seventy years later, our family is incredibly proud to say that the promise remains unbroken.
